When Relief Fades: Reflections on Eczema, Hope, and Holding On

My newest article, for Social Health Network, Eczema community, Atopicderamatitis.net titled When the Best Stops Working: Navigating the End of a Treatment Honeymoon, explores a part of the eczema journey that many of us know too well. It looks at what happens when a treatment brings relief and then slowly fades. It is about the emotional side of that shift, the hope, the grief, and the work of finding your footing again.

Within hours of submitting the article something unexpected happened. I found myself listening to a conversation between Dr. Azi Jankovic and Dr. Edith Eva Eger who was a Holocaust survivor and a brilliant, articulate psychologist who lived a full and remarkable life until the age of 98. At the time I submitted my article, she was still alive. In the few short weeks between submission and publication, she sadly passed away. Hearing her voice and her wisdom during that moment felt almost divinely timed.

There was one line that struck me so deeply it felt like it belonged inside the piece I had just sent off.

As soon as I arrived at my destination, I emailed my editor a screenshot of the interview and shared that I hoped to rework the article to include this message. Even though I was already over my word count, she read the draft, reviewed the transcript, and agreed that it needed to be part of the story.

Dr. Eger said she learned how to be disappointed without becoming discouraged.

For me, that line did not change the message of my article. It strengthened it. I had already written about the way the light fades and rises again, just like the moon. Her words felt like a confirmation of everything I was trying to express about resilience and renewal.

This article is one of the pieces I am most proud of. Yes, it is about my personal challenges with eczema and the search for lasting relief. But it is also about something bigger. It is about how we move through disappointment, how we rebuild hope, and how each of us finds our way forward when things do not go as planned.

Photos of some of the places I visited while on my honeymoon while in Italy. The ancient city of Pompeii with many artifacts. Another favorite was the majestic views along the Amalfi Coast.

I hope this piece will resonate with you.
